Question East Bay shop for 60k service?

Hi,

My 993 just broke 56k and I'm thinking ahead to the 60k service. I've located an online (scanned) copy of the 993 service manual and for a while considered trying some of the service my self. I have replaced the pollen filters so far.

I will need to get a jack, jack stands tools (parts) and probably some good advice before taking on this project.

I'm now thinking about going to an independent or dealer. Any strong recommendations in San Francisco East Bay area? Is it worth it to travel elsewhere around the Bay for this service?

Highly valued is Porsche reliability. I drove across country in March after purchasing the car and tend to go on long drives (Las Vegas, Death Valley, San Simeon) on the spur of the moment, so this service (plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotors, belts, etc) is very important to me.

If there's a local Pelican who wants someone to hand them tools when doing a service, I'd like to watch/help to learn more.

Appreciate any recommendations.

Hi Leo,

If I wasn't so swamped I'd be happy to help you out. You might check out Tom Amon at Mobile Works West. He'll come to your house and you can watch, pass tools. Buy your parts on Pelican first as well.

There are a number of good independent shops in the Bay Area. You might search on the main tech forum to see prior recommendations.

Also, for an idea of what you are in for, www.p-car.com. A 993 is not the ideal first DIY car, but it is doable - we'll walk you through it!

BTW, forgot to mention that the single hardest thing to do on a 993 is replace the 6E spark plug. Took me about an hour+. I did the other 11 in an hour.

You also need to consider getting the belt changed on your distributor. If you are going to DIY, there are a few people that will rebuild for you.

To change belts, you need one special tool (12 point square drive). You are welcome to borrow mine.

Consider running a can of Techron through one or two gas tanks before the oil change (no matter who does it).

Thanks Don, these are very good suggestions and are grist for the mill as the 60k mark nears. I'm on a drive this weekend to SoCal. I'll look for the techron at an auto parts store.

The P Car Dyi's gave me the idea that I could do this myself.

Leo,

If you're set on an independant, I'd seriously consider RMG in Sunnyvale. A bit of a haul ( I know since I'm in Alameda as well), but well worth it. They tracked down an intermittent noise on my 993TT that had others stumped. I DIY as much as I can and turn to RMG when my abilities fall short.
