Hello everybody!
I'm a newbe to the site. i was refered by a friend. I'm looking to buy a 993 hard top. what should i be looking at? most of the ones i've been looking at have 70K to 100K miles. I hear that clutchs, valve guides, sys work are stuff i should be looking into? Please any help would be great. Thanks Stephen |

I think someone once posted a 993 buyers guide, but I can’t seem to find it right now. Perhaps some more searching…
As for the valve guides, read the sticky thread on “CA Smog and the 993” at the top of this forum. That explains a lot, but let us know if you have any questions.

I bought a 95 specifically to avoid the SAI issues. The 95's give up a little horsepower due to the Varioram intake in the subsequent models. It is said that a good chip in the ECU can match the later models output. Also, I bought an Aventurine Green car because they are inherently faster and better looking than the other colors.

I have had good luck with my higher mileage 97. No CEL issues in the lifetime of the car. The varioram helps bring torque to the engine at lower rpm which makes it very nice to drive. It's not just about peak hp. Also, if you start with the VR, nobody says you can't hop it up and get even more power.
![]() You definitely will want a PPI. However, there are no real common horror problems on the 993, say compared to early 964s or mid year (74-77) carreras. Cheers, George |

Get a leak down/compression check.
Make sure you have a complete PPI, get the car up on a lift. Don't buy a garage queen unless you want to only drive a few miles a year and to have a garage queen. Porsche's want to be driven. Drive several, one with some blemishes but with good documentation will probably be better than the really good looking one with no documentation. I'd also keep an eye out for a 964 C4, you can drive those in the winter in Colorado!!! Take a magnet and some felt with you. Run over body panels to test for bondo. There is a buyer's checklist in the first Porsche Page of Pelican. You can also find a buyer's checklist in RennList. Pay attention to what you read here. Most people are VERY helpful and there is some great advise. I'd also suggest you keep out $3 to $8 grand for what if's. Drive the car for some time before doing modifications.

Here is one guide that is available on the web for a modest fee:
http://www.performance2and4.co.uk/993_1_n.htm Also, Excellence magazine did a story on buying 993s in their November 2006 issue. They sell back issues from their web site I believe. Good luck on your search. I just this week bought a '97 993 coupe; after driving a '89 3.2 coupe previously it is a very nice step up! Regards, David
