Bottom spark plug change

All,

I changed the top plugs in my 964 and have not yet attempted the bottom. How much of the exhaust do I have to remove to get to them? Does it all have to be removed at the manifold, or can it come apart in pieces? It appears I have to remove the side panels of the engine box too....... Is this a blind procedure like a valve adjustment?

Thanks
~Jeff

You should not have to remove the exhaust AFIK. Removing the engine tin on the right side helps. But easier on a 964 than a 993...

For the 964 you have to remove the catalyst and resonator. This should be done with valve adjustment. Make sure you do a leakdown and compression test if this car is new to you or has never been done.

Thank you, that is what I thought after looking at the job.

Lower Spark Plug Change

I replaced my 12 plugs on 1990 964 a few weeks ago. For the bottom, I had to remove the engine shield, secondary muffler and the catalytic converter. Also the fiber/heat sheild covers on each side. None of this is very difficult. Easiest to use a lift, but jack stands or ramps work. You'll need a long extension, and a socket that grips the plugs well. I find the uppers are harder to change (especially the right front and left rear) due to inaccessibility. The whole process
took me about 4 hours.
