There are a few schools of thought on this. I'm in the "wash it, keep it clean" school. I don't do anything special, never have. A bit of degreaser, low pressure wash.

I don't wash the top, just dust it off once in a while.
I stuff a lot of rags under the oil filter section during oil changes.
But, I do wash the bottom side, 50/50 simple green and water, and on constant watch for oil leaks!
I don't have the engine undertray and heatshields, makes visual inspection easy and a nice feeling to look at clean aluminum engine case and valve covers.

I wash mine all the time but use a very low pressure hose...more of a rinse.

Clean for me!
I use a small amount of Simple Green and a good hot water rinse.
Only do it two or three times a year though.
