Anyone Upgrade a 964 by putting in a 993 vram 3.6 with the later DME?
Anyone reported an engine swap project of this nature for example RSA equipped with 96+ 993 engine and exhaust? The result would be a slighly lighter chassis with sport suspension and older rawer feel like an RS with more power and less refinement (or softer feel ) of the 993's.

As long as it's a n/a RoW 993, then it's doable. I put a RoW '97 into my US '95 993. The DME and harness from the '95 stayed. A custum chip and minor rewiring for the v-ram actuation are needed. A us '95 993 can also be t/ped into a 964 w/o any big issues.
US '89 - '95 and all RoW throuh '98 use 55 pin harness US '96 up and all 993tt use 88 pin. As to the exhaust, some custom work would be needed. The 993s have volumonous rear fenders that can accompdate the mufflers, even a 964 turbo body has less room. A 993 6speed is also an easy t/p into a 964, though I would only do it w/ a RoW or custom gear stack. |
Thanks Bill.

Just wondering... what problems are there when using a us-98 Vram motor +harness and computer in a 964? Can it be made to work.
OR Is it best to use a 95 harness and computer on the 98 motor? similar to what you did on your car. Thank again Bill |

any of the 55 pin DMEs and harnesses are straightforward to swap and interchange, chips for them are all swapable. US 96 up and all tts use an 88pin OBD2 compliant DME and harness, MY96 DME doesn't have swapable chip etc etc. |
Another question.
When I bought my 98 Vram motor (I'm still not sure what project car I'm going to put it in) the harness to the DME seems to be conected to the complete wiring of the whole car  all the way to the gauges, climate control ect.. ect.. Its like 80 lbs of wiring. Is this the way OBD2 cars are like? Thank you |

Bill the amount you know about these cars is amazing. I've been through a couple restores and I still don't know jack in comparison.

I should point out the the above is just the engine loom, there is also a DME loom that goes to the DME under or behind the drivers seat. Yes, they are heavy, the '96 up 88pin versions are heaviest and the 964RS 55 pin versions are lightest.
Then there are a # of other harnesses for all the other electical componenents, biggest and heaviest are for the passenger compartment and for the front trunk w/ central electical box |

Thanks Bill. I will take a pic of the harness I have and maybe you can tell me if I have the right one... When I bought the motor all the wiring was in a box and I just went with what fit the dme. |
