965 engine removal help

Hi guys i am in the process of removing my 965 engine i have the shop manuals and adrian streathers book, Both go into good detail on 964 engine removal but a little vague on the turbo model.

1) Do i need to remove the entire airbox??? If so any tricks to that???
2) What electrical connections on left side of engine do i need to disconnect???
a) Adrians book shows a nice pic of all the electrical connections on
the 964 but its quite a bit different on the turbo.

3) Whats the best way to jack up car after i have disconnected everthing
just before i remove the engine???
a). this is my biggest concern

Ive done a good bit of homework on this but it still seems a little daunting..... any help from anyone who has removed a 965 engine would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
JERRY

Hi Jerry,

Sorry I don't have any specific hints - but cheering you on and looking forward to the writeup.

Thanks,
Don

965 Engine Removal

Jerry,
I will have to do this one day, so I thought I would pay my dues now and feel good using your BS&T when it comes to my turn to drop the engine.
What year is your car? Putting some details in your signature make this a one-time thing.

The airbox will come out. Put an old sheet under the Intercooler (I/C), this will catch the screws you drop when you disconnect the sensors in the front of the I/C.
Remove the I/C. Then you have to loosen the A/C compressor mounts. Remove the two long bolts in the top of the airbox and disconnect any hoses attached to the airbox. With the bolts out, shift the airbox to the left, open the airbox and pull out the air filter, this gives you a little more clearance. Pull the A/C hoses really hard toward the rear of the car and out of the way (a strong friend with long arms is helpful here).
Finally, yank the airbox really hard straight back and slightly to the right and all of the plumbing and hoses will move out of the way. It helps if you yell "Imagine Auto Snorkle!" at this point.
Then look around to make sure no one saw you scrape your knuckle on the I/C bracket.

Installing is just the reverse of this procedure, but I would reattach the airbox just prior to lifting the engine into place.

Mark

Thanks Mark, today i got the airbox out and removed "i think" all the lines and hoses connected from the top of engine. Tomorrow i will do clutch slave, sway bar and all stuff at the bottom of engine. This is not hard at all "yet" its just taking me a long time because i am labeling all hoses and i have to figure out what goes and what doesnt. As well as figure out what it is im actually disconnecting. I am taking lots of pics and will probably do a write up when im done, although like i said its not too bad yet. Whats BS&T????

965 Engine Removal

BS&T = Blood, Sweat and Tears. Now I am dating myself. I missed them at Woodstock, but who can forget their song "Spinning Wheels"?

Also, BS&T - what oozes out of your body when you do an engine removal on these cars, at least figuratively.

Looking forward to your pictures.

Mark

Check out the multiple posts of engine drops and installs on the rebuilding forum. Hopefully you'll find some photos that might guide you through. Good luck!!
