Remote locks for a 93?
Has anyone added remote key locks to their older 911? Seems like it shouldn't be too hard to do.

I did it to my 1986 3.2 when I fitted a very flash security system, problem was it had the remote separate from the key. I would like to do the remote with my 964 but I'd like it to be built into the key.
In fact I wouldnt mind updating to keyless entry and a starting button. There must be clever electronic techos that know how to do this. Cheers

I installed the DEI Valet 712T keyless system on my '91 a couple of years ago and it has been the most useful mod I have done to my car.
Available at Circuit City for $59.99 If you get it, e-mail me for the instructions for the no-frills set up instructions just to lock and unlock the doors on your 964. Works great and doesn't interfere with the sensitive alarm system. |

The remotes (2 are supplied in the system) are very compact, with only 4 butttons. I just use the open and close ones. Installation is not difficult. The passenger seat has to be romoved to access the alarm system where you tap in the remote wires and locate the smal control box. Here are the instructions. Good luck.
How to Install Keyless Entry (DEI Valet 712T) in a 1991 Porsche 964 This is for a “no-frills” set-up to lock and unlock the door only – no lights, horns or other functions. 1. Remove passenger (right) side seat. 2. Locate the factory alarm. It’s the box closest to the central tunnel. 3. Split open factory firing harness (should have the YELLOW connector). Be careful not to cut any wires. 4. Locate the following wires in factory alarm harness: Brown/Blue - LOCK (-) Brown/Green - UNLOCK (-) Each of those wires should be triggered by a - (negative/ground) input. Meaning, if a (-) input is given to one of those wires they will activate. This can be tested by using a wire tester. Connect tester to a ground (you should see a bunch of brown wires bolted to one of the grounding points - you can use this) on the other side tap wire. This should lock or unlock the doors, depending on which wire you tap. 5. After identifying the correct wires, tap (place inline) the related output wires of the DEI Valet 712T. See the table below for the connections. 6. Next, connect 12v constant and the ground wires. - I used the 12v constant going to the factory amp. Red wire...PLEASE use a cable tester/multimeter to verify this. - Ground used the same grounding point as the others. 712T Harness Car Connection H1/1 Red - (+) 12V constant power input (Use multimeter!) H1/5 Green/black - Brown/Blue - LOCK (-) *inline tap H1/7 Violet/black - Ground H1/8 Blue/black - Brown/Green - UNLOCK (-) *inline tap H1/9 Violet - Ground H1/11 Black - Ground I cut these wires to the required lengths before connecting them. The unused 712T wires I clipped off a couple of inches from the connector to the Valet, which I secured to the tray underneath the right seat. Test all operations, including the alarm, before re-installing the seat. |

The 964 has an electrical central locking system, so locking or unlocking one door operates the other as well. The master button on the console synchronizes the door locks from the inside, although I've never found a meaningful use for this feature. Anyway, the answer to your question is that there are solenoids at each door locking button that are actuated either by key operation or a trigger signal from the remote control box. My system has worked flawlessly for three years of daily operation.

Many thanks to Hambisa for some excellent directions that were *exactly* what was needed to hook up the door lock/unlock. Now, does anyone know how to hook up the panic button for the horn? I'll start a new post for that one.

JC Whitney also has some inexpensive add-on keyless entry systems that just trigger the factory locks/alarm system, I used one of these on my 993 and it works perfectly. I do not remember the exact model I used, but there are several threads over on Rennlist in the 993 section regarding which unit to buy and how to install.

Use the same wiring as listed above at the Central Lock Control unit and you are good to go.

I just installed my 712t and it was super fast and super easy, i think it took me about an hour and it works just fine plus i got it at Circuit city with 40% off since they are going out of business and ended up paying $36 its quite a deal.
