964 Cab - roof operation while eng. running
 

Hi there,

i'm sure everyone here has had probs with the 964 draining the battery. I was thinking of rewiring the roof controls so it is active while the engine is running thus not draining my battery.

Could this damage the motors or control unit etc. Has anybody done this before?

mine does it but it was already that way when I bought it.

your top shouldn't take that long to open or close......if it is draining the battery while you're doing this, you've got other problems....i've got 2 '92 C2 cabs and have never had this problem

Well its more the fact that it wouldnt be taking power if the car was running also if your driving along then decide to put roof down u have to pull over cut car drop roof then start it all up again - would be easier just to pull in and drop it. :)

oh ok-- i think i've seen some adds in Excellence, selling a chip for top operation up to 15 MPH

Its not a chip. Its has something to do with rewiring the control module. I remember a couple threads on it on Rennlist a couple years or so ago. It is a nice mod to have especially if sitting in traffic and it starts to rain. Mine will work until about 15 mph with the emergency brake on 1 click.

If you pull the passenger fottwell cover and look at the cab top "brain", there are 4 plugs:

Plug #2 has the feeds for the left locking motor, as well as the line that runs to the emergency brake switch:

If I remember correctly, "Hd" gets a ground when the emergency brake is pulled. If you ran that line straight to a ground instead of through the emergency brake switch, you should be good to go.
