Overfilling is one possible cause. Have you changed or topped off the oil recently?

There is a breather hose on the top-rear of the tank and vacuum in the intake manifold. A small burp or splash in the tank/thermostat area or even a hard turn can cause a slurp of oil to get in the intake. Even hot oil mist may be vac'd up and condense in the manifold. I have always had some oil in mine, only once was it enough to make oil smoke in the tail pipe. Even then it wasn't enough to foul the plugs

You now know how easy it is to open the manifold, just sop up the oil if it is a problem - 99.98% (1 day in 4200 days of operator-ship) of the time it has not been for me.

colo964 is dead on - same happened to me. Most likely cause is oil overfill though - you could have had oil there for a while. Make sure you also clean the ICV and the air flow meter. Especially the air flow meter does not like oil contamination.

Just out of curiosity, how long did it take you to remove the intake manifold? Anything to watch out for?

Happy spring cleaning
