Will a 1989 C4 tranny fit in place of a 1991

The 1989 C4 tranny has a different part number for the front housing (bell housing). I wonder if there is any significant difference that would cause problems bolting an '89 tranny up in place of a '91. Also wonder if I can still use my DMF in a 1989 tranny. Anyone have any experience here?

I am pretty sure you can't. The 89's used a solid flywheel, different friction disc and starter, at least. I don't think it is a bolt in without some changes.

I put a 1989 tranny in my 1990 last summer. It fits but you also need flywheel, PP, disk, starter and cranksignal from a 1989 C4.
BTW, the Tiptronic starter(1990-1998) is the same as 1989 C4.
