Simple Oil Change/jacking Question
 

I hate to ask this question but I have looked all over and just can't seem to find the answer. I am familiar with jacking up my 930 but not so much with wife.com's 964. I did manage to remove the aero shield under the engine last weekend but didnt' know where to place the jack stands. We don't have the manual for the car so I purchased the Enthusiasts companion guide thinking it would have all the answers. I'm sure there is good info in that book but I can't find it yet.

Anyhow, does anyone have a really good description or a picture of where to place the jack stands on the rear and the front.

Also, I can easily spot where the oil drain plug and sump plug are on my 930 but I don't have a picture of where these are located on the 964. I see a drain plug just in front of the right rear wheel well. I think I read that there is a drain plug here for the thermostat(??) as well as the oil tank. Maybe I just didn't look hard enough for the second drain plug...Either way I would like to know exactly where the drain plugs are located that I need to remove. And do i also drain the dry sump? Seems like there is no sump plate on her car but there is a drain in the same place as my sump plate.

Sorry this is such a simpleton question but I couldn't find the answer to this through google, Pelican or Rennlist. There is a description in the companions guide but they show a closeup drawing of the drain plug and it's hard to understand the picture because there is no relation to the right wheel well. If I missed some obvious location on the web I'm ok with being ridiculed for poor Googling technique. :D

Thanks Bill. So based on your pics I know where the drain plugs are located.

Seems like placing the jack stands in a similar position to your lift will be precarious. With my 930 the rear jack location is the torsion bars and they fit perfectly in the groove of the stands. It doesn't seem like I can get the same level of fit on the 964. Even though it is safe structurally, it sure doesn't seem safe in terms of balance. Am I being paranoid or just missing something?

The reinforced area for jack stands or the lift is directly behind the front wheels and in front of the rear wheels. While flat top jackstands would be best, I'm confident you could not tip your car off the corners.

For an oil change you probably don't need to jack up the car. I just park on a very slight slope or let the rear end hang out of the garage which is on a slope.
Watch out for the drippy oil filter the 964 made much more of a mess than my SC did during the oil change. I will try a different technique next time and also utilize the oil filter drain bolt which I did not use the first time.

I also noticed that the 964 takes much longer to fill with oil than the SC did. You need to start and run the engine after about 6 quarts are in.

There are probably better threads to search for on rennlist that might be helpful.

poke or drill a small hole in the top of the oil filter before you open the oil tank drain and it will suck most of the oil out of the filter thus no mess. Be sure to put tape over the hole before taking the filter lose.

Just make sure your oil is at operating temperature and the front oil cooler thermostat has opened. Then be careful and don't get hot oil on your hands when you open the drain plugs.

And you need a really big bucket, really big :D
