My new '94 964
A couple of weeks ago I bought a '94 964 with 45k miles for $26k. I love the car. Before that I had a '73 911T and than a '75 911S. The 964 is a keeper. I want to drive it for some time and than maybe start a RS conversion.
First thing is, I want to get rid of the chrome wheels or get them black powder coated. But here I have a few questions: 1. When I start the car in the morning, it sounds like having a river running through my car. There is strong gurgling coming form the right engine side. The gurgling is nearly gone after the engine has warmed up. 2. I had to adjust my steering wheel and since than the air back alarm light is on. 3. My speedometer and odometer stop working from time to time. Most of the time they work, but stop suddenly working and come back again. Any ideas? ![]() |

Nice car, welcome!
1. Perhaps the thermostat is stuck open. The oil cooler is in the front right wheel well, but I would not expect oil to be flowing until the engine is up to temp. 2. You need an OBDI tool (e.g. hammer) to reset the airbag light.

I'm anxious to read the opinions on this post. I've previously had older 911s and recently purchased a 94 964 Cab. The gurgling river of oil sound, Ive never heard on other 911s, sounds to me like oil returning to the oil tank mounted right behind the rear passenger side seat. Hoping that it was just "normal" on these cars, Ive assumed it was oil being dumped back into the oil tank prior to the thermostat opening the flow to the cooler. I havent been totally at ease with that idea though, since Porsche seems to have been determined to dampen and insulate these models from engine noises and the gurgling is pretty noticable.
I have no idea on the off and on speedo, but I'm sure like me you are discovering things are generally more complex on this 911. I still love to drive a 3.2 or earlier but Im really enjoying this 964. I look forward to reading the post and participating in the forum. Good luck with the airbag/speedo issues. Patrick |

You can replace the ODO gears, not a simple task but cost effective. Or just buy a new one and swap them out-pretty much plug and play. Welcome to the forum and congrats on your purchase. I am a local in Atlanta as well. There is a pretty good size group that meets every so often (coffee, NA GA runs, PCA, AutoX). Check out rennlist as well (good 964 and 993 forum).

According to quite a few post on Rennlist, the gurgling is pretty common.
I replaced the odometer gears in my 3.2 for not much money, but as far as I could tell, they only turn the odometer/tripometer and didnt effect the speedo needle it's self. I would suspect an electrical short since they go off and on together. Nice to hear there is an active 964 crowd in the atlanta area. Patrick

Thx for all the feedback. Looking forward to meet the Atlanta Porsche (964) crowd. So please let me know when you meet next time for coffee or something else.
Will work on my issues and let you know the results. |

My '93 gurgled when I first got it. I changed the oil and put on a Mann OC54 Filter and it no longer gurgles.
Nice car!

call North Hollywood Speedometer and ask them about the odometer issue. They will probably tell you if they see that issue frequently.
How fast does your oil warm up? Does it reach full operating temp? You just want to make sure the thermostat is not stuck open. Doug

Congrats on your new car.... i think from what ive seen the gurgling is not uncommon and not indicative of any problem. As soon as i get my engine in we should have an Atlanta get together!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The oil sound is normal. Try cleaning the contacts first on the speedometer. If you turned the key on with the airbag disconected that will cause the light to come on.
Nice car by the way

Second the North Hollywood Speedo folks.....very helpful to me when my tach got tired and went on strike. Sure they would be willing to take a phone call.

Nice car. The speedo is electric, so check the ground to the back of the gauge. For your wheels, stripping chrome is a big deal. Since some chromed wheels have been known to leak and/or fail, I'd suggest replacing them instead of stripping the chrome and powder coating.
Enjoy!

Just to be a post wore this AM I will concur with some of the other posts,
I've heard the gurgling sound. You could get on the passenger side where the return oil lines are and listen while someone else starts the car (with the wheels blocked, for safety). You can then verify, but I've been told independently this is not an issue. Check the ground and connections on the speedo. I hope you do know they just pull away from the dash. Do it gently and use only your hands. It is hard the first time. Sorry, know nothing about the light other than resetting.

I always thought the gurgling sound was related to the power steering pump.... My car does it too.
