bad gas

the 964 has a plastic gas tank with a plastic strainer before the outlet. A number of years ago I purchased a 964 that had sat for a bunch of years. the gas in it was putrid and the strainer was brittle and falling apart so it seems that plastic tanks dont stop gas from going bad. fast forward to today... I have several porsches so they arent all on the road and one of my 964's has been sitting a couple of years while the engine was rebuilt and may sit a couple more. how long can I expect the gas to not go bad? Is putting stabil in the gas a good thing to do or is the best solution to drain the gas tank to prevent future "Bad gas" ?

Stabil is not the savior everyone thinks it is. Add if you like but if the car sits for more than 3 months it will begin to degrade. Adding more isn't the solution. Gas will degrade no matter what container.

If the car has sat for more than a year I would do one of 2 things. If I can't drain the tank I would add 100 octane until you can drain it. This will allow you to run the car to move it around but don't get on it. Otherwise you can make a jumper and there is a tap on the fuel line you can attach a hose to. You can bypass the fuel pump relay and jumper IIRC 30 and 87 on the fuse box. Easy to tell the one spade #30 is vertical and the other opposite side is horizontal. I use a long wire and a switch with spade connectors I can plug into the fuse box. This allows you to watch the hose and make sure nothing spills while still being able to control the fuel pump. Once this is done I would replace my fuel filter as well. Also don't forget to remove the DME relay and crank the car until oil pressure is seen on the gauge. Don't crank the starter continuously short bursts work best until pressure is shown.

Jeff I just realized it was you. LOL

Thanks Anthony, the fuel info helps me make a decision. I had heard stabil may not live up to its hype, My bigger concern was could it hurt the fuel system. Just getting lazy I guess, I really didnt want to drain the tank from the bottom. I forgot all about using the fuel pump to pump it out the back. I made a jumper years ago to hot wire the pump, of course I dont know where it is now.

Not a problem. I hate the job as well but it is better IMO to drain it than to do some potential damage. Good news is the bad gas is great for lawn equipment.

Drain it. Harbor freight fuel pump. The 964's take about a minute to pull the fuel sender and the battery powered Harbor Freight pump will have it out in just a few minutes.
Those strainers in the 964 tanks are starting to go bad and the fragments seize up the pumps so sucking it out the top save you from the gas bath.

Once you get one of those pumps, you'll wonder how you survived without it.
Even 911 tanks only take a few minutes to pull the sender

By now the strainers in the fuel tank should be replaced. It is cheap insurance. I don't know, I found that it was only a few minutes to use the fuel pump and never had issues but I am sure either will do. I drained an entire tank from my 928 in under 15 min using the fuel pump.

Don't forget to fit a new gasket for the fuel sender.
