95 993 clutch

does anyone know if you can pull the trans out of a 95 993 C4 without pulling the motor? i might take on the clutch job if you can just pull the trans but i don't really want to pull the motor. thanks.

Yes, some shops with experience doing this can do it, but the factory recommended method is to drop the motor.

Let me tell you, one of the smartest things you can do IMO is to remove the 4 bolts from the case and remove the tranny after, instead of trying to slip the case off the bolts (more like rods) and under the torque tube........as me how I know! Loosen the nuts that hold the tranny to the motor, then double nut them and extract the rods from the case. once the tranny clears the torque tube and the center splined shaft it'll drop right out. The torque tube needs to really drop down low to get the tranny out, but it WILL happen. Btw you'll have to lift the front diff out of the pocket it sits in and jam it forward to make all this work.

Don't drop the motor, silly waste of time and you're just opening yourself up to damaging something else!

I'm trying to hold off on this job till next winter. Why do I need to replace the dual mass flywheel? I was told it's a re-surfacing issue. That's a $1200 issue!!! I was quoted $3600 for a clutch replacemnet. (including an oil change $178) Holy S!!!!!

Because its junk and heavy and going to a LWF will transform the car (just the first step of many). A complete LWF kit will run you $1700 +/- labor probably another $750.00 +/- and well worth every penny. I did my own, so I saved the labor cost but still..........

A failing dual-mass flywheel (DMF) will cause rough running at idle and often throws misfire CEL's. With the outer ring moving on the isolators it's really tough on the engine having all the weight slop around. One short term cure is to turn the AC on - it adds 100 rpms that seems to help with the roughness.
