Porsche Crest Strange Sounds Coming from Engine

Hello all. I have a growing concern towards a sort of "drum beat" sound coming
from somewhere either on top or behind the fan. The sound is like a fast thu..thu..thud which can be heard at idle and sometimes on accellaration. It is so noticeable that I almost don't want to drive it that much until I figure out what it is. It began after I had my car washed. What should I do? Can anybody help me? I would greatly appreciate any advice or information. I hope it is not serious. Thanks in advance....

best case scenario is that its your dual mass flywheel failing... they can get pretty noisy but I dont know if the 1990 got the dual mass flywheel.

OK, flywheel is certainly an option but the fact that it started after washing the car made me think. Of course this could be just a strange coincidence but it might be related. Is it possible that water washed something into the fan housing? Did you wash the engine as well?

Fan hub bearing maybe? When it goes bad, its sounds like a drum beat coming from the center of the engine, above the fan. The noise comes from the fan hitting its housing. You may want to check the fan housing (especially at the 6 o'clock position) for wear mark.

If you want to turn some wrenches, remove all of the belts, start the car [for a short amount of time] and see if the noise is still present.

I think you're onto something because that's exactly what the noise sounds like. Thanks. Do you know off hand how much time and or money that might be?
