Installing lower springs on a 964

I have purchased a set of Eibach lowering springs and wanted to know if anyone could give me some tips on installing them on my 90 C4.

Do you have to put an allen wrench to keep the assembly from turning when you are breaking the nut on top of the strut.

Do you need to back off the bottom spring housing adjustment to take any tension out of the spring before disassembly.

Also can you lower the car more by keeping the bottom sping adjustment backed-out.

thanks
Steve

Make sure you have the right set as I believe 89 - 90 are different to 91 -93.

Also, if the shocks are original, they will need replacing, Bilstein HD work well.

89-94 all take the same kit

Yes, or use an impact wrench.

You need a spring compressor.

You need a corner balance after you replace the springs.

I tried the allen wrench route with a socket on the nut. Wouldnt budge. Impact wrench and it was off in 5 seconds.

I agree with the corner balancing as long as the shocks have an adjustable perch. You need a good alignment either way.

Don't go lower than RS height.

Install is alot easier with 2 people. 1 can get them out.

My car has 93K, should I go ahead and change the shocks and struts. If so can someone make a recommendation. I do not plan on racing but want to lower the car and have good street performance.

I would say now is definitely a good time...while it is apart. Not to mention that is some significant mileage.

Bilsteins are pretty common and most are happy. I have some OE struts from an RSA with probably 40k miles I will be selling soon.

Do some searches here or on Rennlist. You will get more than enough info on the topic.

BTW...shock and strut is kinda the same thing. We have struts.

"As far as the internal workings of shocks and struts, there is very little difference. The main difference is that a shock only acts as a damper and is usually mounted between the lower control arm and the body. A strut not only acts as a shock, but it also becomes part of the suspension system. It replaces the upper control arm, upper ball joint and shock. In most cases the front springs are also incorporated, making one complete unit."

We use Bilstein HD and H&R springs for the street, seem to work fine.

I think for general street use, Bilstein HD's and either M030 or H+R is a good way to go.
