Wanted: what tires to run on 993 NB

I just purchased 17" wheels - 8.5s and 10s for my 96 993 coupe NB. I am looking for street tires. What brands do you like/dis-like and what sizes can I run with these wheels. Thanx for your help.

I like Toyos. I run 225 / 265 on the street (on 18" wheels). Track I run 17" wheels (stock) with 235 and 275 Toyos.

If you mean pure "street" as in no DE or track, ever, then look at Bridgestone RE960's. They are a Z rated, all-season tire. The bad: they are not in the zip code of the SO-2's I took off. The Good: They are very quite, handle well in the dry and the rain, but a softer ride and less responsive on turn in. As a "street" tire, they are great.

what aspect ratio for each tire setup?

Ok, I double checked in the garage:

Track - on Cup wheels (stock 97 993):
Toyo RA1 235 45R17
Toyo RA1 275 40R17

Street and spirited driving - on Fikse FM10:
Toyo T1R 225 40R18
Toyo T1R 265 35R18

If you look for a performance tire for the street that sticks pretty well, I highly recommend the Toyo TR1. I have driven it in the canyons and even the track and the tires perform very well for a tire with that wear rating. I also get over 10k miles on the rears even with pretty aggressive camber.

The RA1 tires actually can be a lot of fun on the street as well, if you do limited miles - say 2k a year. They are a good compromise for the track, if you drive there (no trailering). They do not give the best performance on the track, say compared to Hoosiers but I find them predictable and sticky enough for non-competitive track driving.

There are so many good tires out there that it's hard to come up w/ a bad one, the difference between best and worst is small.

Tirerack does a fair job of testing, comparing and rating tires for a particular niche purpose, it's worth spending some time reading through their conclusions.

George is using common setups on his car, I use the same on different cars
911 C3
8 & 9.5x17 w/ 235/45 & 275/40 Dunlop9000 next tire set will be 225/45 & 255/40 Dunlop Direzza star Spec

993 RS clone

8 & 10 x18(2 sets) Pirelli PZero & Michelin Pilot Cup Sport both are 225/40 & 265/35

George is correct that modern R tires can be used for limited street time, The MPSC are oem street fitments on GT3RS,
