Stupid question:
I need to charge a dead battery. I have a 6 amp charger but I've read that a trickle charger (1 amp) is the way to go. Why? Should I not use this 6 amp charger? Also, what do people attach the negative clamp to? Everything in the truck is painted and my cables are too short to reach much else.

If it's totally dead, then a trickle charge won't do anything. You need a pro-style charger that will start the charging then back off as the battery accepts the charge.
Disconnect the battery and remove it if the charge doesn't reach and make sure to check the fluid level before charging. If the battery is 4 - 5 years old just buy a new one.
