Anybody ever replace the front fresh air blowers?

It seems the air blowers in the front of my 964 have died. So I purchased a replacement unit. But I have no idea how to perform the swap. Accorindg to the manual, it seems I'd need to remove the gas tank ??? And the Bentley says I'd need to remove the A/C lines. Neither idea sounds like fun.

So has anyone here actually done it? Is it as hard as it seems?

I think you do need to remove the gas tank. These fans are really buried. Someone once said they thought they started with these fans, and then built the rest of the car around them.

No, wait, they said that about the A/C evaporator. Speaking of that, here is a DIY for a 993 evaporator replacement. It shows the blower fans. It should help you, even though it is for a 993.

Good luck…

I removed both of the above during a weight loss program on the track car. Even though I was in demolition mode (I didn't care what I broke), it was still a real PITA for an entire afternoon. I recommend working a little overtime at a job you like and paying someone to do this other one...

Best suggestion I've seen so far with the amount of work involved. If you are salaried exempt, wait for the next tax refund and hide it from the wife.

I replaced my left side fan without taking out the gas tank. I did remove the expansion tank, which was very easy. The hard part is dealing with the fuse box and fire wall. I did not try the right side fan since on the left side fan was rattling.

I've suspected that was possible. Since the pollen filter can be replaced without removing everything, I figured the blower motor assembly (which sits right behind the filter) should also be accessible. Thanks for that confirmation!

I've done both and if I could do it you can too! Just carefully remove what's in the way and take your time. The most diffcult part for me was releasing the original fans, it takes some fiddling but they will come out.

It has been a year since the original post, but I did both this month. It was not difficult, day, day-and-a-half now that I know how. Also, I bought a $170 tool it turns out I didn't need. I have step by step instructions if anyone wants them.

Beetle, did you replace them with the $550 each OE motors or something else?

I got a pair of used blower motors from a wrecked 964 in a dismantling yard in Pennsylvania. Rick of weekendrides.com gave me a really good deal (a fraction of OEM), he was quick to respond to my questions, and easy to work with.
