964 leak
Checked out a 964 today. Car is in great shape except for a oil leak. I can see the bottom cover is all wet. Assuming the worst, will 3000.00 fix any major leak (cylinder gasket maybe?)? Does the engine have to come out to fix? Wanted to get advise before I take it to PPI. Thanks in advance.

Allot of possibilities. If your seriously interested, get a PPI, get a repair estimate, talk to the owner about price, then make your decision.

Really not enough information to make a decision. There are several areas for oil leaks. Most can be fixed with the engine in the car. For example, it could be the oil return tubes that I just replaced on mine.
However I have replaced everything I can and it still leaks a little. I think there has been a pole done and at least half I think had leaks. If the car looks in good shape otherwise and sounds like a decent deal, I would do the PPI anyway.

Unless it's the head thing, I don't think it's that big a deal. My 1991 964 Cab has a small leak from the cam covers. It would be at least $1,000 for the fix but I just let the few drops hit the floor. In my humble opinion the 964 is the best bang for the dollar out of all the Porsches. The 3.6 motor is great around town the ac really does work and for the most part its affordable!

Thanks for all the advise. I will get a PPI and see how it goes.

The oil "leak" you see could be as simple as overfill from the last oil change if the current owner / mechanic was not careful - ask me how I know
