Thinking of buying 993 need info from 993 "TECH GURUS"??

I have had a a 1984 3.2 and at present a 1985 coupe with 172k miles. I have found a 993 1995 cab with 29,000 miles, with all the records, perfect paint interior etc. and can buy it for $28K Help me with some questions I have PLEASE?

How long will these motors go before the heads coming off? I change oil every 4,000

How long will these go before they need clutch work? Is the 6 speed box of the nature that it is going to need to be overhauled if cared for and usually when??

What know problems are an issue with this car? Am I going to get $1000 surprises regularly? I have been kind of spoiled with, my 3.2's once straightened out, I have had virtually no problems, and nothing I have had to take to the shop. Do the electrics and warning lights have ghost's.??

I want a car I can drive 250 miles out into the Boonys and not have to worry about a break down. Is this the right car??

I am in California and go out in 110 degree weather and need my airconditioning on and be able to climb hills on the highway at 80 MPH.?? (My Carrera has OK air but only cools down the car and at those temps I have to keep my eye on the temp guage 230-240 sometimes. Does a 993 handle hot conditions any better??

Am I expecting to much from a 993 and should I just stick to my 1985 Carrera?

I NEED THE LOW DOWN FROM THE GUYS THAT KNOW BEFORE I DO THIS PLEASE LEND A HAND, THANK YOU JL

A 29K mile car is very low which is good and bad - should have lots of clutch life left (assuming the first owner knows how to drive it) but you need to look carefully at bushings, seals and other rubber bits to ensure they did not dry out. The other challenge of a low-mile car is how often it gets taken to redline to keep things working well.

Clutch life is the same as the G50 Carerras, it all depends on the driver. I'd say between 40K to 100K is the range. No, the tranny's don't need to be rebuilt if the fluid is changed regularly and the driver shifts reasonably smoothly - nothing at all like the 915 boxes you are used to. It's really a very robust tranny.

It is a much more complicated car than your early 80's 911. This is good and bad. If you can get an OBD-I reader (or use the brake trick) your car will tell you what's wrong. As a 95 you won't suffer from the SAI issue for Smog. Parts and R&R time are more than older cars. That's true of any older car btw.

The AC in the car rocks - cold and reliable. Given the much better aerodynamics it will rarely run hot, even on a scorching day. Much better than older models.

Well maintained, this is a very durable, robust and reliable car. I'd drive it 1,000's of miles without a worry. I worked on my 87 and have no issues with my 96. Though the second oil filter gave me a real fit the first time, and it takes a day to change the plugs. No valve adjustments though.

Get a good PPI and I think you have a great car here. You can read up on the normal DIY stuff at www.p-car.com/diy.

Sounds like a nice car.

The 993 is just as robust as the 3.2 based cars. Engine life is about the same than the 3.2. I have had my car on the track at 100+ degrees and it does very well without any cooling upgrades. Driving the grape vine in summer heat doesn't even phase it. I have done only routine maintenance for the 3 years I have owned it - granted, I have only put about 16k on it. The car needed nothing during this time. I traveled numerous times from NorCal to SoCal in it. All I do for long road trips is check the tire pressure and jump in and go. The 993 may be more complicated than the earlier cars but it still is a hand built, high quality Porsche and it will not leave you stranded.

That said, make sure you have a PPI done on your car by a reputable shop before purchase to make sure the car is as presented.

George
