Correct Torgue Specs 964 Half Shafts

Can anyone confirm the correct torque specs for the half shafts to transmission drive flange of a 1991 964 C2? Bentleys Technical data book says 33lbs but I've heard conflicting reports its 60lbs?

Thanks,

Dan

Jeff, really appreciate the reply. It does appear 60lbs is correct. I believe for the 3.2 Carrera the specs are 32lbs. Just wanted to be sure not to lose a drive shaft at the track.

Thanks,

Dan

I also get conflicting informtion when looking through different documentation.
In "964 without guesswork" it says 26 ft-lb (M8) and 33 ft-lb (M10).
In the shop manual it says 60 ft-lb for my M10 bolts (I have a 964 turbo), so that's what I use.
You probably have M8.

A lost a drive shaft on my way home from a track event because I didn't tourqe it properly. It didn't do much damage to the car, the damage was of a different kind.

I promised my family to be home in time for a major national holliday, looking at fireworks, that kind of stuff. To make a long story short, it was raining, I was lying underneath the car by a major highway, greasing down the white expensive shirt that my wife gave me. Wife and daughter standing by this busy highway in the rain, water running down their faces, looking at a firework in the distance, a police helicopter was hovering above. Man it was bad, very bad.

staffanbe, that is the horror show that I had envisioned for myself. Sorry you went through that with your family. 30 something lbs of torgue just didn't seem quite right for the 10mm allen bolts I was torqueing down. I have a 12 hour drive to a 2 day track event coming up. The last thing I need is to be stranded by the road.

I think there are a couple issues in the spec book making this confusing.

page 130 under manual transmission torque spec shows hex head bolt to flange - I believe this would be the single bolt (hex head) that holds the flange to the dif. and is listed at 32 foot pounds.

page 138 for rear axle shows 42 and 80 Newton meters 8mm and 10mm respectively for the drive shaft to rear final drive - However it appears in the conversion to footpounds there is a typo It looks like this (31.6) but should look like (32,60)
I have never seen 8 mm bolts on a 964 manual trans flange and have always torqued to 60 ft pounds

good luck

On page 42-20 of the factory manual:

"Introduce drive shaft and tighten pan-head screws to 42 Nm (31 ftlb) (M 8) or 80 Nm (59 ftlb) (M 10) respectively."

If you then look in the part section you will see"

900.067.211.09 Pan Head Screw M8x4 -- Carrera 4
900.067.123.01 Pan Head Screw M10x50 -- Carrera 2, Turbo Look, Turbo 3.6, Carrera RS

So the 32 ft/lbs is only for C4s...every other 964 is 59 ft/lbs.

Colin, thank you also for taking the time to quote the specs from the manual and clarifying the correct torque specs. Makes me feel a lot more confident about the correct torgue specs.

Thanks again to everyone who posted,

Dan
