Engine Drop, '92 964
I have dropped the engine in my SC several times. Is there a step by step listing anywhere for the 964? I am just not familiar enough with the connections and components. I need to drop to seal up the engine. It runs fine but really seems to enjoy marking its territory.
Thanks,

Unless it's C-4, I don't recall any major differences. In fact, it may be easier because you can drop it down much straighter after you remove the tunnel cover. |

Watch that silly engine to chassis ground that is not where you expect it to be, and go ahead and order one of those little plastic gadgets that attaches the throttle cable, so when you lose/break it you'll have one ready! Remove the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder that your SC didn't have by removing 2 13mm wrench size nuts from the top of the gearbox and tie it up (do NOT press the clutch!) Separating the engine/gearbox is the real pain, if you have to do the clutch/rear main then you will need a very long 10mm bolt to remove the cross shaft and a lot of patience.
The Porsche factory engine removal tool that fits into your jack and the engine case makes this a one man operation. You might also consider removing the rear bumper, its pretty easy to do and makes life easier. Other than that treat it like your SC. Have fun! |

Drain the power steering reservoir with a turkey baster before you disconnect the lines otherwise you'll have a garage floor covered in power steering fluid. Ask me how I know.

Thanks Everyone. I am sure, like the SC, there will be overlooked connections. I normally work alone so it takes a little longer. Good and bad. No one to blame...

In addition to the good advice so far :
I know of two different people who missed disconnecting the wire that goes into the distributor and broke the connector on the distributor, so don't forget it. ![]() Also vice grips with padding on the ps feed line and you don't have to empty the resevoir. |
