964 Oil Leak - What is this part?

I took the undertray off of my 1993 964 to see where the oil is coming from. It is dripping from the right rear - off of the cone shape black plastic part in the photo at red arrow. I have a pancake size puddle after being parked for 3 days. What is the cone shape item and why is oil coming from this item or draining off of this item

Rick

That is the cover for the timing chain tensioner. Pretty easy to replace. I did both several months back. I would not guess that the only leak is from that place. The timing chain covers have a tendency to leak as well.

Actually, the leak could be anywhere. This just happens to be one of the lower points on the engine so gravity will make this look like a leak. It may or may not be your problem....

Did you have any luck fiding your leak? This sounds like the same thing mine is doing.

Hey guys. Best thing to do is try and wipe down the underside clean and dry. Drive it around for 1 or 2 hours and crawl back under for a close inspection. As noted earlier oil follows gravity or drifts back and down when driving. Typically the seals around the timing chain covers, the chain tensioners and the valve covers can leak from loose nuts or old gaskets.

Good luck
