964 exhaust loudness

I am going to replace by catalytic converter to a test pipe or a 100 cell sport cat. I currently have a cat back muffler and wondered if anyone had a simular setup to telling me how loud it would be with either converter. I do not want it to be too loud

My exhaust is chopped up by the turbo then through the test pipe and then the stock muffler. Slightly more growl, more crackle on decel. It works for me because I can feel more power.

Go with the 100-cell pipe or stock. The noise from even a drilled cat is not pleasant and will make your car stink like a cash-for-clunker.

I've got a '93 RSA that I've done just about every combination possible with the exhaust (including Cup exhaust to bypass the primary and secondary mufflers -- although you can work around the second part and keep it). What I recommend is the following:

Don't touch the cat unless you replace it with something else functional (e.g. 100-cell). Remove the secondary exhaust (the big lumpy one that feels like a boat anchor). This will give you great sound and a noticeable pickup in acceleration. Leave the primary (U-shaped) and really don't bother with the cat -- I don't think it's worth the money.

Besides, the deeper you get into the exhaust system (tailpipe->secondary->primary->cat) the more work it is and the less skin you'll have left on your knuckles!

I'll probably replace my Cup pipe with the primary muffler because with both mufflers gone (and the secondary is the one to do IMO), my neighbors hate me

I have a cat by-pass and priimary muffler, no heavy seconday muffler and I love the growl.
The only downside is the slight oil smell from not having a cat. It never smelled when it has a cat. But, I love the slight smell of oil burning from a flat six engine though.
