Transmission is mush!

While accelerating on a nasty bumpy road, my transmission made a load thump and gave up! The g50 transmission now crunches as I roll it across the garage. The car is a stock '93 C2 cabriolet and has no track time or performance upgrades in its future. I assume I lost the differential gears...

Does anyone have suggestions\comments? I figure I could:

1) Rebuild existing transmission, but I have no idea of the parts cost until I get in there. Pelican doesn't seem to sell the parts so I'm looking for suppliers. I rebuilt my 3.6l including splitting the case and that baby runs great after 6k miles so I can tackle this as well. I found an article on Rennlist that explains how to get the trans out without pulling the engine.

2) Swap in a rebuilt transmission. Again, nothing from Pelican, but I found a seller that sells them for around $1900, but I'll lose some money on the core due to broken gears and there are shipping costs.

3) Swap in a used, identical 5-speed tranny from a clean salvage car. I've seen them listed for $2500-4000. Does anyone else sell used trannys closer to Madison, WI?

4) Can I swap in a 993 6-speed? It might be a little more expensive, but if it were a bolt-in, it could be a unique upgrade.

Thanks!

I pulled my tranny last night and left the engine in. It SUCKED. I will not be doing that again. Next time the whole drive train comes out. Not sure what I'm gonna do, but my tranny is in need of surgery or replacement.

Sure it's the trans? Did you check the CV joints?

I'll check the CVs today. Wouldn't both have to fail at once?

Wow, I feel stupid, but I'm really happy. The CV joint was completely loose from the tranny! I bolted it back up (applied some locktite and torqued to 47lbs) and she's back on the road. The crunching was the CV and bolts scraping against the undertray and tranny.

How the heck did this CV loosen without me hearing it? The car is a cabriolet, so I can hear the engine through the top the few times it's up and even more while the top is down. Full power and then nothing...

Christmas came way early for me!
