Anyone pull just their transmission?

My tranny needs surgery and I'm pulling her out tomorrow. I don't have time for the snowball job pulling the whole drivetrain would turn into, as I'm probably moving by the end of the year and don't want to have to flatbed my 993 to the new house. I think I know what I need to do, have the 6mm bolt to pull the fork shaft out, will get a tranny ribbon jack and have done plenty of engine R&R's before. Anyone here done this before? How tough is it for one man? Seems to me the hardest part is getting the car high enough on jack stands.

Rick - I had mine done for me when they did the LWF/Clutch. The tech said that supporting and then aligning the heavy transmission is hard, apparently getting the clutch fork in without knocking out the roller bearings is a real bear. It's a do by feel job.

You should definitely replace the RMS and Tranny Nose seal while it is out.

I pulled it Sat. Worst job I've ever done. I did it solo with a floor jack, tranny jack and jack stands. Miseralble 10 hours of hell, pain and self-doubt. Reinstall is gonna be bad too. But the fork shaft came out like butter and looked new. I may replace those needle bearings with brass bushings if they make them for 993's. That fork shaft honestly looks to be the least of my worries. Can't remember if the RMS was done when the LWF/RS were installed. Not sure I want to deal with it, but might. Still waiting on my mechanic buddy to come over and crack this tranny open for a diagnosis.

It may have likely took the same 10 hours to pull engine/tranny combo, but it likely would have been less frustrating. I have found with too many "short cuts" that often trying to get around a job is often harder than just methodically going through the bigger job. Now saying this, I often go against my wisdom. I recently converted my Buick GS to a four speed with engine installed....probably would have been easier to pull that engine/tranny combo also. Just a 911 engine drops easier and a 4spd rwd tranny is a lot lighter than a G50 transaxle.

Best of Luck and get some NSAIDS in you before heading to the garage for the install. Call a good friend!

Rick, it's really easy to pull the trans. only and reinstall. There are tricks to do this, feel free to call me about this, also I posted in regard to your gears.

I did the clutch etc. last spring and removed the motor/tranny because of previous threads saying it can be done, just not preffered. we had a b_tch of a time getting the tranny to mate back to the motor. Using the alignment tool, 1.5 hours!!!!
One trick, as you holding the tranny up, turn the motor a tad (crank pulley) and mine slid right in!! Good luck....

I've mated trannies back up to motors in plenty of 911's. That's no problem with a few people. I just wiggle the output flanges to make the splines line up. Doing it with the engine still in the car is gonna be more interesting.
