Windshield Removal

How do I remove the rear view mirror? I am removing the glass to fix all the rust around it. In other cars you can remove the rear view mirror and leave the base with the windshield to be re-installed later.

I had the same "problem" when I removed the glass. You can actually push the mirror off the stem - it's just a very tight fit. However, there is a very good chance you will break the plastic mirror housing. It has been exposed to sun and heat for many years and will be brittle. Unless you are lucky, factor in a new mirror - that's what I ended up doing.

However, if you are just repairing rust around the windshield, you can reuse the glass. Just buy a new seal and re-install the old glass. No reason why you shouldn't do that. Just clean the glass well and make sure there is not old glue left on the glass. Btw, make sure you disconnect the antenna wire before you lift out the glass - but you knew that. You will need help getting the glass back into the frame but it's worth a try.

I broke the antennae wire connection to the glass is there a fix for this?

Well, depends on where it broke. If it ripped off the glass, I am not sure how to fix that. If you broke the wire further down, you can solder the wire back together. Just make sure you get a good solder. There is very little current going down that wire and any additional residence from a bad solder will degrade your radio reception.

An alternative is an antenna under the dash instead of the windshield antenna. Take a look a something like this:
