Question about top rebuild 993
I looking at purchasing a 1995 993 with 80K miles. The car has not had a top end rebuild. Can anyone tell me what to expect or look out for?
Thanks Kelly |
Why worry about a rebuild? Is it leaking oil all over? Are the valves noisy and hydraulics clacking? How's it feel driving it? I've had these beasts for close to 30 yrs., all models and condititions. These are the best.
Buy it if you like it, enjoy it. If you have "tinker trouble" as my late father used to say........buy it and immediately, commence taking it apart and doing all the unnecessary repairs that make you happy. Just don't post an oil thread or pan question....please!!!!! Seriously, if problems are at hand, a skilled ear and experience can find them. These are not timebombs. Search here for similar posts/concerns. Enjoy. |

You would want to remove a valve cover and inspect for valve guide wear.

"95 models (pre-varioram and OBD2) 993's don't suffer some of the problems the later ('96 -98) Varioram/OBD2 cars have.
However, preventive maintenance and repair would be leakdown/compression test, system check on PST2 or similar visual inspection of spark plugs, ignition wires, caps and rotor arms and a very close inspection of areas at the base of the cylinders and oil return tubes. As Eric says, as the lower valve cover gaskets are probably leaking anyway, check the exhaust valve guides for wear. Apart from that, change the oil and both filters regularly and don't use it for short trips. |
993 top end rebuild
Thanks guys, really appreciate all the advice. I will be making a decision in the next couple of days on a purchase.
Cheers! Kelly |
My experience with both 964 and 993 is that top end rebuild is needed for one reason: valve guides!!! But there is no way to check for that. Some said wiggle the valve stem, another sign is smoking out the tailpipe at idle or letting off the gas at high rpm.

Try to get honest info from the owner on oil consumption. It's probably the single most important thing that will tell you when you will be needing a top end rebuild. Anything approaching 1000 miles/quart means you are getting close.
