'90 CV joint removal
I need to remove the outboard CV joint from the axle for servicing. How is this CV joint removed? Is there a circlip on the axle like there is on the inboard CV joint? I found one post for a 993, but I am unsure if the 964 and the 993 are the same for CV joints. Also, the PET shows a circlip for both inboard and outboard CV joints, yet everything I have read indicates the outboard is a press fit only - no circlip.
Any help is appreciated. Steve 7/29/10 - Update. I finally found out how the CV joints are attached to the axle for a '90 C2. I am assuming here that all 964's have this same configuration. The inboard CV joint is held on the axle with a circlip. Eash to remove, disassemble the CV joint to clean, inspect and repack with grease. The outboard CV joint is entirely different. The joint and the splined shaft (the part that slides into the wheel hub) are pressed together at the factory. So, if you have a bad outer CV joint, your only solution is to buy an axle with the outer CV already installed. You cannot take this apart without destroying the CV joint, the splined shaft and everything else associated with the outer CV. I had one mechanic tell me the outer is assembled using a process called "inertia welding". I have never heard of this process. He replaces the old axle with a new one when the outer CV joint fails. I hope this helps anyone who needs to replace the outer CV joint.
