3.6 problem areas ?
I mistakenly posted a similar question on the 996 forum just recently...oops.
Just looking for info/experience from you guys re: issues that develop in 993 motors over time/miles. I'm buying one from perhaps the best known builder/shop in the Southwest but want to know what things to be aware of on a used (48K) 1995/993 motor. Leak down was 2 to 5% which I guess is good. One person said to beware of dist. drive belt. How do you know about the lower end or is that a problem area ? Edit: I'm planning on a 95/993 motor but let me ask also if I should be looking at a 964 instead. I thought the hydro lifters and still OBD I was a good choice ? I do not/will know track or Auto cross. Just drive for the fun... What else need I know about ? ...uhh except the attention of the CHP. |
The bottom end is a pig in a poke on a used engine, unless you can run it. Then oil pressure will indicate if anything is going bad. Also, oil analysis would be something to consider if possible on a used engine, if it still has some oil in it. I believe a couple of tablespoons would suffice.

I am no expert but if you look at 993 reports, the average runs are about 2500 miles, so I would say that it is meaningful at about 1/3 that mileage. Say 800.
You may want to ask the experts at Blackstone Labs They also offer a fast turnaround kit "lemon-aid". HTH, George |
