Steering Rack Rebuild

Has anyone rebuilt their steering rack themselves? If so, is there a write-up on it somewhere? I pulled my rack last night thinking I was going to replace it with a rebuilt one but figured if I can rebuild brake calipers how hard could it be? I found the kit but want to see exactly what the job entails to see if it is worth the trouble. TIA for your help.

Wachuko and Indycam are pulling parts together and have promised a "how to" thread (on RL). Look at the "free steering rack" post.

This is the kit I use to rebuild mine, about 6 hours of work in two days.

GAJ- did the kit come with instructions in english?

No, I found some DIY post on rennlist with pictures, is really easy in the end, a lot of manual job replacing gaskets and seals but nothing complicated, was my first time and I'm really happy with the results and saving, almost two years since the fixing an no leaks so far and my car is a daily driver.

Steering Rack Rebuild

Thanks Guys, this must be a very common maintenance item. The 964 is leaking PS fluid every where. Thought of just converting the rack to manual, but if I can manage a rebuild myself. Well PS is a good thing vs. manual for around town. :D

You will probably want to get new boots for the rebuilt rack. Also, the steering rack bolts need to be replaced. If you take careful measurements before removing the rack, you can avoid getting an alignment.

i decided to buy a rebuilt unit off of the internet. I removed the tie-rods from the steering rack and let them hang to the side while I replaced everything. Worked out perfect and I did not need an alignment. All bolts were replaced as well as the boots. Now that I have done it myself, if I should ever have to do it again it will be MUCH faster.
