Porsche Crest VIN Issue Kepping Me Awake At Night

Please reply even to say "me too",
I always thought the VIN's should match (like the "Matching VINs" we all read about). I was poking around and saw some funny numbers on my car. The sticker, DS door pillar, and plate under the windshield all match as follows:
WPOAA2969MS4*****

This indicates a German (W), Porsche (P), Passenger car (O), Coupe body style (A), Turbo 3.3 (A), Seat belts & airbags (2), 1st part of a '96'4 (96), Test digit (9), 1991 car (M), Made in Stuttgart (S), 2nd part of 96'4' (4), and the 5 digit serial number (*****). All this information matches my car.

In the trunk, the plate right above the spare tire has this number stamped into the sheet metal (unmolested):
WPOZZZ96ZMS4*****.

The serial numbers (digits 13-17) match. Why are these numbers different?
This number relates to a ROW car. But the last 5 digits match.
What's going on?

Thanks,
Mark

I believe there is nothing to worry about because the body is made for all countries so they stamped the Zs
Check the book from Adrian S. about 964.
As far as I remember that is quite normal.

Your "discrepancy" is OK. That VIN on the underside of the front trunk lid always reads "WPOZZZ..." Even for US market cars. And that "9" in the VIN that changes to a "Z" is OK, as well, as it's meant to just be a placeholder/test digit, like you say. Mine alternates between a "2" and a "Z," depending on where you're doing the reading.

Thanks for the Reply

It is good to know that I am not the only one with fuzzy vision when I am looking at those numbers in the trunk.

Thanks for your reply Noah.

I was worried for almost a year now, that somethig was wrong with the car VIN number. I even got little disapointed, because I though the car had altered vin. I even stoped working and investing on it.

This thread finally gave me peace about it.

Thanks fo clarifying.

Andres.

Even further investigating this, I found this:

The information in my 1987 930 Slant Nose is:
suspected Model: 930 S-N (ROW or US??)
On Chassis:
VIN under the hood above the gas tank: WPOZZZ93ZHS051298
VIN on door pillar: WPOJBO933HS051298
Information on Engine: Type: 930/68
Engine Serial: *68H01343*

and some literature from book "original Porsche" from Peter Morgan on page 122 says:
#1
Model: 930 US
Type: 930/68
serial: WPOjb093HS050001-5000
engine number: 68H0001 onwards

# 2
Model: 930 S-N (referer as Slant Nose)
Type: 930/66
serial: WPOZZZ93ZHS050001-5000
engine number: 68H0001 onwards

there are two options.

or my car has something wrong or the book is wrong.
