Question Mistery fuse around fuel pump?

1990 964 C2

I suspected that my fuel pump died (again!) and I went to remove the metal cover of the fuel pump compartment, and when it was off the car I noticed that there was a fuse laying on it (that is, on the inner side, the one facing the pump when the cover is on.) I have no idea how the fuse ended up on the fuel pump cover but I'm thinking, if there is a fuse somewhere there and it fell off, that's a good reason for the fuel pump to not work!

However, looking at the schematic view of the fuel system I didn't see any fuse mentioned there. Has anyone seen a fuse somewhere around the fuel pump? That's an awkward place to put a fuse but then again I can't think of any explanation how it ended up on the cover.

Thanks,
Emil

Can you give us some more specifics on how your fuel pump "died"? My schematic for the C2 is 1991 but it shows Fuse 34 connected to the fuel pump. Was that a change from 1990?

Thanks,
Mark

It died on my way to work, in the middle of a right hand turn.

I am sure there is a fuse for the fuel pump but this particular fuse that I found was not anywhere near the fuse box. Are you saying that there is a fuse somewhere in the fuel pump compartment? Which schematic shows that? I am looking in a file named E_964_KATALOG.pdf, on page 105 (the sequential page number in the file.)

Zago,
I think that I have a similar, if not the same problem. This morning my 91 C2 died after pulling away from a light. It sounds like it is not getting fuel. If I let it sit for a minute with the key on, it will start but immediately stalls. Is this the same with your car? I am suspecting the fuel pump but just getting a sanity check.

Before you spend $$ on a fuel pump, be sure to check your fuel filter. Sometimes trash in the filter will block the filter element when the engine is running. Then when the engine is shut down, the debris will fall away from the element, providing enough fuel flow to start the engine...But then when the engine is started again the pressure inside the filter builds up and causes the debris to block the element again and causing it to stall.

It's not an everyday thing, but it does happen

Can you put a jumper on the DME relay socket inside the fuse box and see if the fuel pump runs? This is the quickest way to check if that loose fuse does matter. If the fuel pump runs, that is not the problem then.
