Octane ?

Hello all. Forgive me if this is a really dumb question but here it goes anyway. Is there a huge difference between 92 and 93 octane when it comes to our cars? Reason for asking is that I recently topped off for the winter (car had about 3/4 tank) and the gas station closest to my house only had 92 octane. I added Stabil for the winter months as usual as well. I was just wondering.

Thanks,

Chris

Yes, no problem with 92. Probably all the same anyway. Just make sure if you do start it over the winter to let it get up to full operating temp and that it opens up the oil cooler circuit.

Cheers, James

Some places in the back woods of Texas and Arkansas only have 91. Hopefully, no problems.

As long as it has no Ethanol in the fuel you are good. Cars should not be stored with fuel that has ethanol in it. Ethanol is hygroscopic and can cause corrosion in the fuel system.

I don't plan on starting it over the winter. I have a battery tender and put Stabil in the tank. Does Stabil handle the ethanol problem?

Thanks,

Chris

Did you put the required amount of Sta-Bil in the gas tank prior to filling it or did you just pour it in when you got home?

Sta-Bil should be added to the gas tank first, then filled with gas (that mixes it up) and by the time you get home, the mixture would have made it throughout your fuel system.

And when you get down to it, you really don't need it for a few months storage. I never have except for a motorcycle that sits for 10.5 months per year.

Alex, I add it first then fill up and go for a spin. I probably don't need it but I guess it can't hurt either.

Thanks,

Chris

Most fuels here have Ethanol, but my Porsches are both "every other daily drivers".

I believe Stabil will help reduce the effects of potential corrosion when Ethanol type fuels are used.

There is a "marine" stabil that advertises "ethanol" on the bottle. It's probably just the red stuff dyed green, but that's what I used.

Hi Wolf76 do you not have Shell Optimax V Power as that is 98 Ron? Use this all the time in my car in fuel filler cap says 95 Ron thats standard fuel.

European and North American octane numbers are not the same; they are rated differently.

Super Plus 98 in Europe is equivalent to ~93 to 94 in the US.

Shell V-Power in Europe is 100. Here in Canada it is a 91 or 92, mostly due to conversion which means it should be a 95 here, but due to a different formulation which brings it down another few points. I e-mailed Shell Canada some time ago for an explanation. I use Shell V-Power in Europe when I am there.

Traveller thanks for your input did not realise there was such a difference, all i know is my car responds so much better when she is running on VPower. Wether the hype is true it says it runs your motor allot cleaner.
