993 turbo alternator failing
Hi,
The alternator in my 993 turbo (1996) keeps failing. The garage (official Porsche one) simply cannot find the reason for this. They have had my car for a month now:-( They have installed two new alternators, which both failed after 10 minutes in the car... It all happened one night on the freeway (there had been sort of squeaking noise from the belts or bearings a few days). I accelerated hard and suddenly a very strong burned smell appeared. I of course immediately pulled off and the smell disappeared. But a sort clanging noise from the engine appeared (most noticeable around 2000-3000 rpms, turns out it comes from the fan)). The next morning after a 10 min drive almost every warning light came on. So I thought the alternator/fan belts had broken, but no, they were fine. So, as said, the shop replaced the alternator(which they said had failed), but it didnt help, and the car keeps in burning alternators. Would anyone have any idea what is going on? (the shop apperently doesnt:-( ) |
Could the fan/alternator mount behind the fan be cracked?

thanks Flieger!
will ask the shop to take a look |
problem solved
So finally I got my car back:-) The problem was the dual belts (the bearing failed
I think) driving the fan and alternator. The alternator simply didnt turn when at high rpms. So actually it didnt burn the alternator. oh well... |
