WTB 964 outer stub axle
 
Redoing my CV's and one of my axle stubs has some gouges. Looking for a 964 stub axle, the one that slides through the rear wheel bearing. pm me if you have one with a price.

I wonder how that got gouged up. It is fixed at the female splined hub. It does not spin on the rear wheel bearing either.
Anyway, I thought that comes with the axle assembly only. You have to buy the whole axle.

It's gouged up or worn in where the ball bearings sit on the inside of the axle stub. As far as the setup, it does come as a complete unit, but I had a machinist buddy of mine do some work on it. He lathed off the crimp part on the end of the CV cup and then tapped 3 screws for re-securing it. This makes it easier for maintenance and re-greasing. Theres a link on RL on doing this.

I just did my rear wheel bearings. I don't think the axle stub rides on the ball bearing inner race. The axle stub goes inside or slides into the female splined drive hub which rides on the ball bearing inner race.

I would like to see the 3 tapped holes for securing the stub axle to the CV. That is interesting. Can you snap a pic of the stub axle showing the 3 tapped holes? I wonder how those 3 screws will hold up to the torque because the axle needs six M8 or M10 allen cap screws to attach to the transaxle output flange.

Picture borrowed from RL but you can see the tapped holes. This was done by one of the guys that rebuilds his axles on his race car, so it holds up to torque. Also when I say Ball Bearings I mean the ones in the CV joint not the wheel bearing. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1296585243.jpg

The 3 holes were just meant to hold the CV boot and metal cup in place, so it's not transmitting the torque. It does makes CV disassembly and servicing on the stub shaft end really easy.

Hi, I probably have what you need but I don't have time to check right now. I will when I get back and advise. I do know I have the complete 1/2 shaft fro a 993 car but unsure of the 964. Will the 993 C/V work on your 964 axel? Not to sound like a moron but maybe someone out there could help? Thanks, I will let you know.

you can see there is some minor cosmetic damage from removal of the boot cover. there are some marks where the ball ride in the joint but no spalling

993 stub axle wont work, it has 48 teeth for ABS not 45 that the 964 uses.

I don't think there is something wrong with your axle. The rough finish is actually a relief cut for the female spline hub. I checked my axles and they look exactly the same as yours.
