Window Switch Replacements
 

Greetings,

I have replaced 3 window switches in the last year on my 1990 964. 2 were the OEM replacement and the 3rd was an aftermarket option. One of the OEM switches has failed again and I'm getting ready to purchase an aftermarket replacement but my question is; What's causing this to happen so frequently? I also read on the forums that it's a very common issue on the 964's for these switches to go bad but why? Has anyone found a permanent solution to this issue and would like to share their experience?

I don't know but I've got one that went bad and I'm going to walk out there right now to see if I can't come up with a decent fix.

PNine64 - Travis, please share what you've discovered or at least attempted to do. There was a DIY on the Rennlist Forum I read awhile ago, which had a solution for this issue. I'll have to go and find it and I'll share it here. I never used his method as it was relatively cheap to purchase the aftermarket switches but now 3 switches in a year is getting ridiculous.

I remember reading that thread. :) I ended up doing something similar but it seemed like a paperclip was too narrow (eat into the plastic) so I used a couple of small brad nails I had in the garage and clipped them to a couple of mm (keeping the head side as it fit perfectly in the rocker hole). Then I drilled (with a bit by hand) through the undersized plastic pivot point that it previously "rocked" on. I inserted the snipped nails but intentionally let it stick out a small amount because I figured it would get pressure on both sides when you snap it back it.

I don't know about you but I have small BBs in the switch that were a real PITA to get all back together. It does seem to work like (well better) than it supposed to. Don't know if it will last or not but hopefully it won't bother me for the rest of the summer.
