HELP - 993 rattle/ squeek from pass side dash

Hello all. I have a 1997 C2S that has started squealing / rattling from the dash or the windshield. I know that my problem is not unique in that my father's 993 turbo had the same problem (his was much worse).

The noise is fairly constant once the car is in motion but seems to be worse at lower speeds (I do not know if that is because it gets better at higher speeds or there is just more noise to cover it up).

Anyone know the source of my frustration?

Thanks in advance!

It sounds like the a/c fan or the pollen filter ..

This could very well be the windshield seal which is a very common problem on the 993's. Does it squeak and groan at low speeds, especially if you are traveling over speed bumps or entering a driveway?

Over time the rubber seal that spans the body and windshield loses its "fuzz" on the body side of the seal. When this happens it squeaks like crazy. Im also aware that Porsche had a service bulletin for this issue and had the dealers install a squishy rubbery rope under the seal in the gap between the windshield and body.

Together, a new seal and rope cost about $70 or so from the dealer and the install is a very easy DIY. Simply yank the old seal off, clean the dust from the gap then install the rope followed by the seal. I lubed both with some soapy water and used a plastic bike spoke wrench to save wear and tear on my thumbs. Worked like a charm, no more squeaky dash/windshield.

Hope this helps; I guess you better figure out if this is your issue first...

if it is the windshield, spray some motorcycle chain oil under the seal and it will remain quiet for about a year. I read many post about the dreaded windshield squeak and was happy i did not have it - until i got a new windshield a few years ago (with new factory seals). The oil is a quick & easy solution (at least for me).

I had a similar issue. It was not the windscreen...but the platic vents rubbing against the dashboard. Pulling the vent out and applying a silicon based lubricant around it and into the gaps around the dash seems to have fixed the problem largely...

I also have slight rattle.. I think it is the doors. I am going to look at replacing the rubber/felt seals around the door and possibly also replacing the metal clip that it locks into that is on central pillar near the rear decklid release/tyre pressure sticker depending on whether your car is left or right hand drive..

It is rare but in some 993s the actual glove box cover also can squeak or rattles and needs attention..
