964 Operating Temp

Can you tell me what the normal operating temperature range of a 3.6 litre
1990 Carrera C4 should be & what that would indicate on the oil temperature
gauge?
When started from cold my temperature climbs to just over the quarter
mark, then as the valve opens to divert the oil to the front oil cooler,
it will drop back to just under the quarter mark. If travelling on the
highway with plenty of ram air coming in through the front, the temperature
will stay at just under the quarter. If however, I am caught in traffic
the needle will quickly climb to just over the half mark, at which point
the oil cooler fan will cut in & hold the temperature at the half position.
I have been told that the oil cooler fan is a 2 stage fan, yet mine doesn't
seem to operate until the temp goes right up. Can I alter the point at
which this fan cuts in? Most running is at 30 degrees Celcius Plus ambient temp, so it's very hot. My dilemma is that I would like the temp to run
lower, like it does when I am on the highway.

John Henry-

I just went through this discussion on and off the list with Adrian and I can guarantee your engine temps are absolutely normal!

Thanks for the advice. This is my first Porsche & also the first air cooled (or should I say oil cooled) car I've had & I guess I'm just not used to seeing the temperature fluctuate so much.

you should check the oil fan cooler resister if you only have one speed on the fan. there is a very informative thread on the rennlist 993 board. check it out...

As CKrause stated, your experience is absolutely normal. Also, George is right about more than one fan speed. You should check it out.

I encourage you to check out the 964-specific board on Rennlist.com. It gets many more 964 posts than this board, the archives are terrific, and there are several Aussies that regularly post there.

Enjoy your new P-Car!

Hi Guys,
Just bought a 91 964. Since I spend most of my time knee deep in Porsche parts, it was time again. I have always had early 911's 914-6's. I love the car !
Today was the first time in heavy LA traffic I noticed the temp and I was a little concerned. I have mainly driven her at night.
Spent Sunday, replacing the plugs/caps/rotors/filters. Having the felt done next week. I'll pass on doing this repair.
Oh yeah at 100K my car did not have the vent kit installed and was also running the engine shielding.
Should have new GHL muffler installed by next week. Will let you know how it goes, or rather sounds.
Take care,
Don
