993 check engine light
 

Driving home today "check engine " came on. First time ever happen in my full year's ownership. Car is still running like normal. Any idea what the problem is?
Car is 96 993.

How many miles do you have? My 96' 993 had problems with the check lite and it turned out to be the OBD2. 993s had problems with that due to clogging of the air bypass in the exhaust end of the head (see prior blogs). Can be a expensive fix- mine was.

He's referring to secondary air inlets in the head ,this may not be your problem
the check engine light merely notifies you when a problem with the engine monitoring system exists.
It could be a myriad of differing things but usually easily fixable,have your mechanic plug a diagnostic tool in and determine if it's an easily repaired item or something more involved.
Also the light may extinguish on its own if problem doesn't persist, Bert

The car has very little milage...around 28K.

I've made an appointment with Porsche dealer next week to see what they have to say. I understand it may be the ODB2 problem or something else. Gave it a good run today but the light is still on.

I'll post once I have the problem diagnosed.

Auto Zone will scan it for you for free. They can give you the codes which you can then look up.

How does that work?

I've taken several vehicles to Autozone for a free scan. Just drive over there and tell them you need your vehicle scanned to see why the check engine light is on. They will even provide a printout of the bad codes. Of course, they assume you will by the part to turn the check engine light off.

with a handle like saxony_wu, the OP may not be in the US and have access to an Autozone, but an equivalent car spares shop in any country should do it. Or buy a cheap scanner and DIY.

Unfortunately I'm in Toronto and we don't have Autozone here. However I brought it to a Porsche dealer and the mechanic was nice enough to scan and turned off the light . He told me it may be the OBD2 problem. I'll bring to car back and let him do a thorough check next week.
