993 A-pillar door strap fix repair

Hi guys,

has any of you repaired this commonly loose door strap fix in the A-pillar? I am thinking if it is possible to cut out a piece of metal from inside, at the foot well and weld it from there??
I have heard some guys take the wing off and approach that way

Mike

There may be less involved methods, but I from what I've read, the most effective involved removal of the door and fender.

Had my drivers and passenger door strap attachement point welded from the door opening. The shop did such a good job by welding around the entire piece with fine "fillet". They then sanded it and painted. If you did'nt know, you would swear it came that way.

I looked at the ways to do this repair and elected to effect the repair as did the last poster. I had the door check attachment lug (that breaks loose from the A-pillar internally) attached to the A pillar with an external fillet weld, both above and below the attachement lug. Then took a Dremel tool and cleaned up the fillet to look cosmetically nice. Then repainted the A pillar. The welder charged me $75 to make the fillet welds and to dress them down cosmetically. I used an air brush to apply epoxy primer and then to paint out the A pillar. The cost to do this with removal of the fender would have been over $500. Paint and welding cost me about $125.

In my opinion, unless you intend to compete in a concures, the external repair is both structurally and cosmetically fine. When I look at the area now, I really can't tell there has been a repair unless I compare it with the other door check.
