Porsche 993 starter problems

Hi I am new to this forum, just hope someone has had a similar problem. I have a 993 Cabriolet, with 35,000 on clock from new, I drive it about once a week, (winter) every day summer, went to take it out 2 weeks ago, and had trouble starting, I know that the ICV is stuck on open, but it should still fire up, it started once and was q bit lumpy, but put that down to too much fuel and flooding, I have replaced the DME relay with the new version 993 still will not start, and I can smell fuel so I know its not the fuel pump, anyone got any ideas ??

I would begin by looking for air leaks. A cracked hose or a loose clamp could let in enough extra air to act like a stuck ICV when running as well as make the AFR way off while trying to start it. This is rather tedious as there are a lot of connections and hoses that are hard to reach, but a mirror and a light can help. I would also check the ignition system. I would begin by verifying that the secondary distributor drive belt isn't broken. This can be checked by removing both distributor caps and ensuring that both rotors turn when the car is gently pushed forward in a high gear. You can also remove the DME relay and turn the engine over briefly with the starter. After that I would check spark plugs and ignition wires. If the 993 is like the 964, the wires are solid core and last a long time. The connectors, however, container resistors and can go bad. They can be replaced individually. My bet is that the problem is either an air leak or broken D-belt. Good luck!

I found the opposite.

My original wires had cracks in the insulation when I bought my 993 in its 14th year. This is especially the case for the lower wires near the exhaust and where some of them make tight bends.

The connectors cleaned up nicely and all met specification. They were reused when I made up a new replacement Beru wire set. Now almost in their 19th year, they are still firing away.
