Checking Oil Level in a 993
So, I'm embarrassed to say that I can't find the dipstick in my 993's oil filler tube. I used to have a 1973 911S, and it was attached just inside the tube on that one. But I don't see it on my 1997 993. Can anyone help me with this stupid question?

Thanks!
Awesome, that is so helpful. In my 73, it was actually inside the oil filler tube. Thanks so much for the help!

Also get to know how the indication on the dipstick relates to the indication on the oil level gauge on your instrument panel.
For example, I checked my oil level gauge indication yesterday. This is what it looked like with the engine oil at full operating temperature and after 15-plus seconds of idling on a level surface... ![]() And at this oil level indication, the oil level on the dipstick was at the very top end of the spiral portion of the dipstick. And before anyone tells me my 993 is overfilled (*), its been that way for thousands of miles; no change in oil level, therefore zero oil consumption. ![]() * oil level is often discussed on these forums and the going recommendation is to never let it indicate more than at the 3 o'clock position; some will even say lower. This after owners complaining of high oil consumption if the needle is near the top of the scale. |

I check mine at running temp, @ 3 o'clock. No dipstick needed.
