Gas strut remove/replace
My 1990 964 C2 Cabrio requires replacement of the gas struts that support the front bonnet.
Can anyone give me advice on the technique to remove and replace the struts? Access to the bottom end of the struts, especially on the left side, looks a little daunting. |

Get the longest set of needle-nosed pliers you can find before you start. Give yourself plenty of time, don't rush and follow the DIY. It's not necessarily a "piece of cake," but it's not brain surgery either.

Wasn't too bad to do on my 993. I think they are similar. I followed the link above - worked great. The only thing I did different, I was able to gently but forcibly press the "ball joint" on until it snapped to tell it was engaged (instead of adjusting the clips). Now the rear hood struts, that's another story...

One lesson I learned was to place a light colored towel/cloth under the area where the clips are attached. The towel will minimize "ricochets" when (Not if) the clip slips as you try to attach it, will keep the clip out of tiny nooks and crannies, and the light color will increase the chances of you being able to see it once it stops bouncing around.
