Engine rebuilder refferal

Hello Gents,
I'm searching for a respected engine rebuilder for my 993 in the Bay Area.
I was told about RMG ENTERPRISES in Sunnyvale. Their price of $12,000 for a top end rebuild seemed high.

Any advice from this esteemed group?
Thanks in advance.
James

What's the poll for

My apologies. I must have pushed the poll button by mistake.
Actually I don't know what the poll is all about. How do I go about removing it?
Sorry to have wasted your time.

If anyone can help, I am still looking for a good shop in the Bay Area for the upper end rebuild however.
James

Hi Matt,
I have not reached out to Mr. Woods.

Thanks,

There is no better engine builder than Jerry Woods. He has a world wide reputation. You can reach the shop at 408-369-9607. Rich Walton is the co-owner of Jerry Wood Enterprises. His mom, Nan Walton, will likely answer the phone. Ask for Rich or Jerry and tell them what you need. The shop is very busy so you will need to schedule your rebuild. The winter is coming up and is a very good time to do this.

The price quote from RMG was a "real number". You won't be getting a phone call two days after the motor is out and apart saying "Oh by the way...You're going to need a clutch, a sound pad.....etc. etc.

Just saying.

Engine rebuild

Hi Dan,

Now I can't sleep.

I haven't called Jerry Woods yet to get his quote, it just might be at the same number as RMG.

The reason I was reaching out was I had a quote from the garage I use and was told $10,000. They did admit they may not be the best source for a rebuild, based on their ability. At least they were honest with that?

I am grateful for the help I've received from everyone.

You made a good decision not to use that garage.

Your engine rebuild cost will depend on if they find anything wrong with the motor so don't hinge your decision on an estimate. Rich Walton will not try to compete with anyone's price. He will deliver a good product at the best price that meets the customer's needs and JWE's quality.

$12,000 seems very high to me. Do you need a "Top End" or a "Complete Rebuild"? You should know from a few leak down tests and/or compression tests.

Top end should be somewhere from $3,500 - $5,000 depending on replacement parts

Complete rebuild shouldn't exceed $8,000 unless you've blown it, have bent valves, or are looking to upgrade the guts to race. Agree on Jerry Woods being the best in your area.

SCARGO in San Rafael is a very good shop as well. They do build engines and have a dyno, much like JW. I actually think their operation is cleaner / nicer, FWIW.

Don't expect any of these shops to work for cheap.

I also believe Kahler's in Dublin was a good shop, but I don't have information since the new owner took over. Kahler himself retired / sold out 5+ years ago.

Cheers,

George

RMG is a quality shop. He helped me when I redid mine at my house. Bob even came over to give me some suggestions. I think I spent at least $8k in parts for my rebuild. But I am a little anal with rebuilds.

JW fabricated two special shims for me to put under the cylinders to maintain compression ratio.

Did you get a listing of parts and labor with the quote? Why are you going for a top end?

RMG is no-nonsense and they quote real prices with no surprises. Bob tends to be conservative and only uses top grade and OEM components. I've gone against his sage advice a few times and have regretted it each time. His shop isn't a discount/cheapo job, but it's 100% trustworthy and high quality.

You may want to work with him to detail out the expense and see what you can and can't live without during the rebuild.

+1 on both RMG and JWE.

Just curious - how many miles on your car and why do you need a top end?
