G50 question (1993 C2)

Greetings to all,
First, let me introduce myself. I recently purchased a 1993 C2 coupe 5-speed. (Amazon green over tan). The car has 133k miles and has recently developed a transmission problem: 5th gear will often pop out during decel or if I suddenly lift my foot off the gas pedal during cruising. My mechanic seems to think it may be a bad syncro (very unusual). Anyway, I currently have a couple of options:
Option 1. Remove & repair/rebuild transmission.
Option 2. I have the opportunity to purchase a rebuilt G50/03. This transmission was rebuilt by a UK company called Ultima (Ultima GTR - Street legal racecars from Ultima Sports Cars.). They race cars and use the G50 as 1 of the transmissions offered.. This G50 supposedly has less than 1000 miles since rebuild.
What do you think? Going with option 2, I can resell or part out my old G50 (which may still have many good parts since everything else works fine in it) and recoup some of my costs, correct? Option 1 with a full rebuild (rather than just fix 1 problem) will be more costly than outright purchase of option 2. I’m kinda leaning toward option 2 but wanted to hear your opinions.
I’m not too concerned about matching numbers as this is a high mileage driver mass produced.
BTW, G50/03 is correct for a US 1993 C2, correct?
I will be posting this in both 911 and 964 forums, so if you see it twice, just read it once!
Thanks for looking and I would appreciate all comments.
John

John,
As far as I can tell (from my factory manual) the type G50/03 was the equipment used in the 1990 and on US C2. The G50/04 was used in the Swiss cars.

You may also want to look at the motor mounts and shift bushings before dropping serious cash on a trans.......
You ever go to Cars & Coffee in Irvine ?

Motor mounts were changed to RS (I was told by PO). Have never been to C&C in Irvine but curious about going one of these days. Where is it exactly and what hours? Thanks

C&C is off the 5 freeway @ Alton. Look for the Taco Bell headquarters building on the south side of the 5. It is usually packed after 7am and most leave around 9am.
The reason that I questioned your cars mounts or linkage is that the gears may not be fully engaged.

i agree, look at motor mounts, trans donut, and shift bushings before you spend g50 kind of money. if those parts are ok, then a nice g5003 is the ticket. i would ask for build records or reciepts.
