The alarm system has been triggered. Cycling the door locks disarms teh alarm system.
Somebody must have unhooked the alarm horn.

the two times i have caught this it was in the garage and i know nothing externally could have triggered it. there was one other time when it was in the driveway and my son came in and said that the lights were flashing but when i walked out it had stopped.
is this something that could drain the battery?
what should i do going forward?

I can't remember if a 993 alarm will eventually reset itself but if it doesn't, it will eventually run down the battery. Probably been a long term problem and that's why the horn is disconnected.
On my car, the engine lid switch is the most sensitive but there are a multitude of switches that could be the culprit.

thanks, i believe the alarm must be resetting itself after some point since the flashing lights were off when i went out to look at it after my son had told me they were on.
