993 3 spoke wheel install, now air bag light?
I took the plunge to install a 996/Boxster 3 spoke steering wheel in my 96 NB 993...
Without disconnecting the negative battery terminal but pulling the horn fuse (thinking the horn and airbag might be on the same circuit), I removed and replaced my 4 spoke, for the 3 spoke wheel which I sourced from ebay. I purchased the wheel from one reliable source, and the airbag from another. Now, after the swap, I have an airbag light on my dash! I tried plugging in my 4 spoke airbag thinking maybe the air bag light was due to an incompatibility with the 993 clock spring elect. assy., but now the airbag light remains lit even with the correct air bag attached!?! Can someone please offer some thoughts or recommendations on the situation? Thanks in advance to the Pelican guru's!!! ![]()

Did you have the key on at all with the airbag unplugged?
If so that's why..... I would have it cleared, and see if it comes back on...... I've also seem the clock spring cause problems once it's touched, but you shouldn't have had to mess with it since the wheel goes over it.....

I guess now I need the right OBD II tool that recognizes air bag faults and can reset them. Do you mean to say that simply touching the clock spring can cause an issue? I'm sure I touched it while feeding the wires through the back of the wheel...

Airbag system is not dependent on horn circuit. You should disconnect the battery and wait at least 20 minutes to allow capacitor in airbag system to drain so the system is not energized before messing with the system
Now that the light is on the only way to turn it off is with hammer/scantool.. |

I have had clock springs just fail with a short or broken connection after swapping steering wheels......but it's not common unless you were rough with the switch when pulling the plugs through the wheel.
If it's a 96 it should have the obd port on the side of the center console, in which case durametric can reset it as will the hammer......if the port is round and in the passenger kick then you must use the hammer. scanning it is the only way to find out what's up....

Thanks fellas; for boiling this down for me...It is a 96 and the port is exactly as stated.
Now all I have to do is find someone with a Hammer or Durametric scan tool to reset the fault. The saga continues...
