964 backdated steering wheel

Getting ready formy backdate project and the one thing I can't figure out is how to backdate the steering wheel while retaining the airbag. Any thoughts? The car will have period correct recaros, rubber shift boot and black knob. Otherwise the interior will remain stock but I think that 4 spoke wheel will stick out like a sore thumb.

Why retain the airbag in a backdate project?

The shelf life on an airbag seems to be give or take 10 years anyway. I have a 92 and I'm pulling that sucker out.

Just curious, when you remove an airbag, does the airbag light stay on?

Safety-restraint industry insiders with whom I've spoken disagree and said they think the bags in my '90 can be relied upon for many years. The 10 year shelf-life comes from the product liability lawyers who are paid large dollars to cover the car-manufacturer's buttocks.

Yes, although spontaneous deployment can occur. Furthermore, it is rumored that the early bags were engineered with the unrestrained driver in mind. That is to say that a properly belted occupant has less to gain whilst still bearing the risks associated with an air bag explosion, appropriate or not. There are other considerations as well. Searches may be illuminating.
